A pond or water feature topped up from the building supply is a connection between drinking water and standing surface water — with algae, fish, fertilizer runoff from the surrounding landscape, and whatever the wildlife contributes.
Features with a recirculating pump can push, which moves them out of suction-only territory. Features that are treated for algae are carrying chemicals as well.
The common failure here is not the assembly. It is a fill line that was added later by somebody topping the feature off with a hose, and never got protected at all because nobody thought of it as plumbing.
We build water features and we maintain them, and on our own installs the fill line is part of the build rather than an afterthought. These sit outside the foundation, so we handle them end to end — test, repair, replace and install.
Which assembly your provider will accept depends on their cross-connection control program and the code in force where you are. The seven device types we see on the Western Slope.
